Paget's disease of the breast is a cancer that involves the skin of the nipple and areola. It presents with eczematous, crusty changes of the nipple and is usually tied to an underlying breast carcinoma in the ducts (ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive ductal cancer) beneath the nipple. The hallmark is malignant cells in the epidermis of the nipple, so the disease centers on the nipple-areolar complex. It is not a benign skin condition, and while an underlying ductal cancer may be present, the key structure affected is the nipple.
